Exclusive! The Winners of JOE’s Jeans Next Model Contest

With the success of model-themed reality shows “America’s Next Top Model” and “Make Me a Supermodel,” even clothing companies are getting in on the competition-style search for their mannequins. To celebrate a newly revamped Website, JoesJeans.com, JOE’s Jeans launched a model search contest earlier this summer and the winners have finally been announced, exclusively to StyleList. The lucky model lady is Madeline Lamond from Sacramento, Calif. She’s a 20-year-old dance major at the University of Irvine, weighing in at 125 lbs. and a towering 5’11″. Representing the cream of the male crop is 24-year-old Craig Meyers from Charlotte, NC — a rough-and-tumble 6’2″, 175 lb. warehouse shipper. After both submitted videos and photos through JOE’s Next Model contest Website, the previously unknown regular folk were then voted into the top five by the American public, and JOE’s panel of judges thought the two embodied a unique sense of character and style. “My New Years resolution was to be more spontaneous, so when I saw the advertisement on campus I thought I would try something new,” says Lamond. “I’ve been trying to get into modeling for about a year and was having no luck with all the informal go-sees. I was so surprised when I won! I remember forgetting my name was Madeline when they announced us as winners.” Meyers was equally surprised, but taking it all in stride. “JOE’s was willing to take a chance on amateurs and see how it went. To me that’s an incredible risk and I’m honored to be a part of it,” he says. “It would be great if it helps as a stepping stone into the industry, but for now I guess it can just be a pretty good pick-up line.” Both models will appear in the next JOE’s national ad campaign. Check out their winning portfolios at JoesNextModel.com and read up on our latest model headlines here.

Exclusive! Nadja Swarovski’s Jason Wu Dress for the CFDA Awards

Exclusive! Jason Wu’s sketch of Nadja Swarovski’s dress.

The CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) is readying for its annual fete — which honors the industry’s finest — taking place this Monday night.

Among the haute fashionistas in attendance will be Nadja Swarovski, whose namesake company is underwriting the festivities.

And on Tuesday, Swarovski will be blogging for StyleList exclusively about her experiences at this year’s awards.

In the interim, she has added to the increasing excitement by sharing this sketch (right) of what she will be wearing — a one-of-a-kind black silk faille sheath dress created exclusively for her by Jason Wu.

It features butterfly embroidery and is crystallized with jet Swarovski beads that took 60 hours to stitch onto the garment.

Check back on Tuesday to find out how this special creation fared during fashion’s big night.

Vqha eBay WTF of the Day- Bad jean jacket #2_3550

eBay WTF of the Day: Bad jean jacket #2

WTF? This is so obviously wrong.

It’s like this. The jacket was too long so they decided to cut it. Then, while they got ready to cut it, they had seven martinis and decided it would be really funny if they just cut some of it off. We can just see this being a good idea at like, 3am:

“Yeah, you know…like coattails…but on the sides…of this denim jacket…with three quarter sleeves and an awkward, sideways belly-flap.”

But that idea should have been trumped in the morning. What…what were they thinking? The words “easy access” come to mind, as do the words “misguided” and “don’t drink and design.”

Apparently the side tails are split, and the seller says you can knot them.

Word to the wise: It’s not gonna help! This garment is weird, and $80.00, and that will make you look wide. If you’re gonna wear this style of androgynous denim, at least do it frumpily and safely. What? No, just don’t do it.

WTF?

eBay WTF of the Day: Bad jean jacket #3

Ach! Too! Busy! Cripes! Eyes! Burning!

Be careful with denim, people. This is an example of where a simple crime against denim could lead to total outfit mayhem. We don’t care what you’re wearing under that jacket; we take one look at it and we’re having a seizure on the floor.

This jean jacket from Josephs-colours-sells on eBay is a Coldwater Creek from the underacknowledged realm of “trying to look like your mother and doing it wrong.”

Everyone loves a beautiful brocade pattern, and if this were cut as a blazer, not made of denim, and a different color, we’d love it. But we hate it. There. It’s out there.

You gotta be careful with blues, people. This “almost denim” color looks funny 99% of the time, with the exception of when it’s a dress and when it’s worn with white. But make an “almost denim colored” jacket out of denim? And put a pattern on it? No. Unacceptable.

WTF?

rmwu eBay WTF of the Day- Shoes from outer space_3

eBay WTF of the Day: Shoes from outer space

Wowza. These shoes are astronomically out of control. Not only will they make you 6 inches taller (we think; the shoes measure 8 inches from top to bottom at the back), but they also look like they are made of spaceship scraps.

Perhaps they were designed specifically for outer space. Perhaps there are lasers mounted inside for battling evil moon-critters and martians. Check out the scalloping on the bottom of these shoes. Perhaps they are weighted, to aid with gravitational issues. You could totally dig into some extra terrestrial terrain in these bad boys.

The best part of the listing:”Not for the faint-of-heart but your friends will love them. Not worn.”

This pretty much tells us everything we need to know about the owner’s situation. Clearly, she was out shopping with friends and saw these shoes, and was like “oh my god you guys, I have to try those on.”

And so she did. And her friends, stunned, were like “Christ on a bike, you have to get those.” And so she did.

Her friends still probably ask about the shoes, in that toxic, dripping with superiority way, all like: “Have you worn those shoes yet?” “Hey, why don’t you wear those big silver shoes tonight? No one else will be wearing them.” *stifled laughter*

Seller Thed.lesliecollection realized her friends were laughing behind her back, and that she had to unload the outrageous pair of cartoon robot shoes. It’s a sad story, really.

Honey? We don’t want them either. WTF? Okay, maybe we’ll buy them for a friend.

No.

7bjm Dramatic Jewelry by Bejewelled Bespoke Design

Dramatic Jewelry by Bejewelled Bespoke Designs
Do you love big, bold, dramatic jewelry? We do, and so does our featured indie designer, Tricia Yap of Bejewelled Bespoke Designs. Tricia currently handcrafts each elegant piece from Hong Kong, and offers free international shipping on all of her online sales.

Tell us a little about yourself and your work. My name is Tricia Yap and I am a self-taught jewelry designer originally from Sydney, Australia. I recently moved to Hong Kong with my partner and darling cat, Genji, after quitting my stressful corporate day job for a change in scenery. My work is all about statement jewelry -– big, bold and lavish! It is the conversation piece at an event where you know no one, or the piece de resistance of an outfit. My jewelry is for the woman who wants to express herself through her accessories and is not afraid to do so. It is not just for night, but also for the day. And for all occasions -– whether you are stepping out to meet a friend for coffee, or going to a wedding.

How did you get started as a designer? My mother was a fashion designer -- when I was little, she had a couture shop full of the most amazing gowns and she used to give me little jewelry design projects to keep me busy as I proved useless with a sewing machine. I always dreamed about those full length gowns and how I would one day be able to be tall and grown up enough to wear one. As I grew older, I continued making jewelry just for myself and always received compliments from friends and people off the street. Soon enough, I was selling to friends and their friends via word of mouth. Since relocating to Hong Kong, I decided to put my jewelry designs online.

What inspires your work? My mother's style inspires me. She is the most elegantly and glamorously dressed woman I know, and one of the few women who can take a simple outfit but still come off as amazingly stylish. Color inspires me –- particularly gold, black, emerald green, white opal, red, and yellow.

Who are your favorite designers? Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, and Valentino. My mother has kept all her pieces from these designers dating back to the 1980s, and that is sheer proof that they are timeless.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? My fashion must-have: statement jewelry. I could step out in a pair of skinny jeans and a tank top, but if I put on a pair of long dangly chandelier earrings I wouldn't need much else to make the outfit. Fresh and glowing skin is my beauty must-have -- drink lots of water, eat healthily, exercise frequently and smile often.

Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? Always persevere and do not let anything discourage you. If you feel down or have a mental block, go for a jog or do something different for the day. You'll soon be able to get right back into it without a worry. I am also learning how to promote my jewelry -– it is the only way to get the word out about your designs and generate more sales!

Where can people find your work? My Etsy store is http://www.bejewelledbespoke.etsy.com and I also update my blog regularly with other designs -- http://www.bejewelledbespoke.blogspot.com

Anything else? When I am not designing, I love snowboarding. If I am not dreaming of my next design, I am dreaming of my next trip to the snow.

We love all of the amazing independent designers out there and we wanted to find out more about what makes these creative types tick. If you do too, check out more of our Indie Designer Interviews.

rchg Dos and Donts Transitioning Your Summer Wardr

DO get real raingear

Just because they are both made of rubber doesn’t mean flip-flops can double as rain boots. This girl should’ve taken a cue from her identically cloaked pal and worn a pair of wellies instead.

Dos and Donts Transitioning Your Summer Wardrobe Into Fall
Ah, good ol' fall: a season filled with falling leaves, shorter days and, our favorite completely unpredictable weather. With the sun blazing one second and freezing rain pouring the next, is there a trickier time of year to get dressed? Read on for some real-life examples of what works--and what doesn't.

DON'T assume your zip-up hoodie goes with everything When the weather turns brisk, avoid the easy cover-up solution: your ratty sweatshirt. Unless you're headed straight to the gym, opt for a more tailored jacket or hip shrunken blazer.

DO put away your beach-babe essentials While some summer styles can continue to be worn, wearing beachy sandals year-round is a definite DON'T! Flat sandals or tights, people, never both! (When is it OK to wear tights with sandals? With--and only with--a heeled pair of sandals.)

Ronnie Andren

Ronnie Andren

Ronnie Andren

DO ignore old-school style rules Don't be afraid to rock white after Labor Day. Crisp white jeans can work year-round, especially when worn with a snappy blazer.

Ronnie Andren

DO layer on the leather A cool leather jacket over a bright, simple dress is always a DO--just make sure the jacket fits snuggly and the dress isn't too fussy.

DO borrow your guy’s cardigan (or get one of your own)

Make your favorite sundress fit for fall by wearing it with a longer cardigan. Cinch both dress and cardi with a belt at the waist for a cool, fresh look.

DON’T go to extremes

If it’s hot enough to wear shorts, you don’t really need to be wearing a puffy jacket. (And if the weather does warrant a puffer, you need to swap out the shorts for a great–and much warmer–pair of jeans!)

DO add cold-weather accessories

Pair black tights or a light scarf with any look to carry your summer wardrobe into fall. (DON’T, however, pair said scarf and tights with anything too clingy or loud.)

DO score a classic jacket

Rely on the timeless great trench to take you into fall: It will be your foolproof topper from now until the snow starts to fall.

Ronnie Andren

DO learn when (and what) to tuck

Don’t force roomy jeans into super-narrow boots, unless you’re into the swashbuckling look. Instead, stick to skinny styles that won’t bunch up over your favorite pair of boots.

Coach Opening Men's-Only Store

Now your man will no longer have to sit in that designated "I'm With Her" chair while you peruse the latest Coach collections.

The venerable leather goods company is opening a men's-only store at 370 Bleeker Street in New York City's West Village late this spring.

Designed by the Coach Architecture Group, the space will pay homage to the neighborhood's historic flavor. The storefront's original copper-finished exterior will be restored to complement the company's silver-leaf logo, custom cartouche detailed windows and signature brown awnings.

Products stocked will include luxury products ranging from small leather goods and footwear to outerwear, watches, fragrance and special pieces. To commemorate the opening, Coach will produce a limited series of graffiti printed canvas totes to be sold only at the new West Village shop.

"We are proud to announce the opening of our first men's-only store and plan to use this opportunity to showcase innovative design and enhance our men's business," a Coach spokesperson told StyleList.

"With the exclusivity of this single locale, bolstered by the intimate nature of the space and service offered, we have the potential to appeal to a more style conscious and fashion-oriented man."

Um, could they be referring to one Josh Duhamel, star of "When in Rome" and Fergie's other half? He's been spotted out and about in the brand's Quilted Down Racer jacket, $598; available at Coach stores nationwide and by calling 888-262-2440.

Despite the economy, Coach seems to keep rolling out new and different product classifications and concepts. We can't wait to see what Creative Director Reed Krakoff unveils during fashion week at the debut of his own ready-to-wear collection.

kizc Clinque Dry Spot Balm_2779

Clinque Dry Spot Balm
Winter showers bring spring flowers and... dry chapped lips. Luckily, Clinique just gave us a great answer to winter's cracks and chaps.

Clinique Medical, the new skin care line from Allergan and Clinique available only via your physician, helps prepare skin for procedures, sure. But we're not getting a procedure (laser, light treatment, etc.) anytime soon so we tested the only thing we could – the Dry Spot Balm. The marine botanicals helped sooth while the six lipid complex helped block the harsh weather and kept our lips strong and moisturized. Even cleared up our hub's (who works outdoors) horrible chap. Definitely one of the best balms we've ever had and certainly worth the $24 tag.
