With its rich chocolate finish and classic leather embossed “GG” finish, you’ll want to spoil yourself for many seasons to come with the Gucci Guccissima Hobo ($1,400).

We’re going to see looser handbag silhouettes on the Spring 2010 runways, so as long as you pick a seasonless color like black, brown, soft gray or cream, you’ll be set. A soft, neutral metallic that can neither be classified as gold nor silver will also give you plenty of mileage.

Getting Purse-onal – Drawstring Bags, a Fall 2009 Trend Worthy of Your Wallet

Purse-onally Yours,

Pamela Pekerman

But when the wallet is tight, a bagista needs to become resourceful and choose her investments wisely.

There are many handbags to fall in love with for fall — Alexander Wang’s Coco Duffel, Chloé’s Paraty Medium Tote, Be&D’s Garbo Portfolio Bag.

Pamela Pekerman is the founder of BagTrends.com

A less costly, though still worthwhile, take on the trend is the supple, pebble leather Elliott Lucca’s Zooey Drawstring ($268).

Gucci’s Guccissima Hobo with drawstring closure. Photo: Saks.com

Since the drawstring look is big this season and is also a classic style (read: will be around for awhile), I’d splurge on a good quality version. My preference is leather, over say suede or other overly trendy materials which are less likely to stand the test of time.

The dashing Dr. Rey, a.k.a.the original Dr. 90210 is a famous plastic surgeon and reality show star. He’s also a shapewear magnate, which is good for those of us who want a high, firm behind, without the pain and recovery time of a “Brazilian Butt Lift”.

Dr. Rey’s Shapewear smooths out the ripples and bulges of rich and regular folk alike — this is what celebrities wear under their red carpet gowns! Equally enticing, this stuff is pretty sexy, like the High-Waist Thong Lace G string they’re showing in the video.

So if you get lucky while wearing this shapewear (which really is the point, right?) you will avoid having a mortifying Bridget Jones granny panty moment. In fact, getting you out of the X-treme Plunge Diamond Bodysuit might be his favorite part of the night!

Various shows at Fashion Weeks around the world sent outfits down the runway that would look good on no woman — box shaped dresses, drop crotch pants, impossible to wear heel-less and sole-less shoes, ugly rats nest hair — there was very little that even vaguely resembled what we know as sexy.

But, nonetheless, any female who has the confidence and swagger necessary to pull of these kinds of styles is sexy in her own right. The fashion blogger scene is chock filled with girls who are tripping over themselves trying to out-ugly the next fashion blogger. Whoever can wear the most hideous outfit — and make other girls want to run out and buy that very same disaster — wins.

The fashion industry has taken note — women don’t want to be cute anymore — weird/fugly is fierce.

Fug is the new sexy

Fashion may have “gone ugly,” according to the headlines over at Fashion Indie. But, we have to admit we kind of like it. Gone are the days when women dressed solely to impress men. We’re now dressing to impress each other and man, that’s a tough audience.

So, rather than try and please with perfection, a standard that no woman can achieve — especially when we’re critiquing each other — designers have chosen to take the opposite route — they’re fugging things up.

Stealing beauty: Liv Tyler is the new face of G-Star denim. Photo courtesy of G-Star

Liv Tyler is back in the modeling game.

The model-turned-actress-turned-model again? is set to star in the Spring and Fall 2010 ad campaigns for denim brand G-Star as its “Brand Ambassador,” helping the company with its U.S. expansion.

“Liv is a great fit for the brand because she exudes the perfect level of sensuality, a characteristic very important to G-Star,” the company said in a statement. “She’s a strong, beautiful and independent woman with an impeccable feeling for style.”

The Dutch company is looking to grow from 12 stores to 50 stores in 20 major metropolitan areas within the U.S. by sometime in 2015.

And though the jeanswear maker has been seen as a fashion company and has staged major fashion shows during New York Fashion Weeks, it really wants to refocus as a denim company.

“We’re a denim brand that happened to show at New York Fashion Week because we believe it’s a platform into America,” explained Shubhankar Ray, G-Star’s global brand director, to WWD.

Garnet Hill Holiday Gift Ideas Catalog – Sneak Peek

Known for all things comfy, from flannel sheets to cashmere sweaters, Garnet Hill puts out an especially cozy holiday catalog.

Creative director and vice president Charles Pates gives us an inside look at the company’s 2009 gift catalog, out later this week.

To evoke the winter holidays, Garnet Hill’s team traveled to Iceland’s coast, an otherworldly landscape of basalt pebble beaches and turquoise ice floes. “It’s got a magical, Middle Earth quality about it, perfect for holiday gifts,” desribes Pates.

There’s a practical benefit to shooting in the Land of Fire and Ice, too. Since the photos were shot in summer, “it’s either [Iceland] or Mount Hood!” laughs Pates. And with the midnight sun, the crew never had to worry about running out of daylight.

The models are wrapped up in the toastiest of sweaters, often with oversized or cocooning silhouettes. Standouts include decorative hand-knits, bell- and lantern-sleeve styles and a sweeping ruffle-edge cashmere wrap. There’s even a new leopard-print cardigan — classic with a racy edge.

Several offerings have a cross-cultural bent, like the exuberant bedding inspired by Eastern European folk art. “We edit the world so you don’t have to,” says Pates. These global influences tend to be timeless rather than cutting-edge, weaving seamlessly into Garnet Hill’s traditional look.

The company’s designers are also inspired by their own backyard. The new Buckets of Joy Advent Calendar, for instance, was sparked by the sap buckets that hang from maple trees up in New Hampshire, Garnet Hill’s home base. A set of 25 miniature steel buckets hangs from a cord, ready to hold sweet treats in the days before Christmas.

Many of Garnet Hill’s items are exclusive, but the company also partners with a few other like-minded designers, such as jeweler Chan Luu. Luu’s GH real estate has been growing; here she introduces a couple of striking, oversized necklaces.

Hable Construction’s retro-chic designs also fit right in. Fresh, exclusive designs pop up here, ranging from plump felt ornaments to long johns to snowball-dusted wool rugs.

Fashion rewind: Watch the many styles of Sarah Jessica Parker bump and grind around a rocking out Lenny Kravitz in Gap’s 2004 “How Do You Wear It?” commercial.

Gap has created some very creative, iconic and, more than anything, catchy commercials in its day.

Who can forget the swing dancing, khaki-clad hipsters featured in 1998′s innovative stop-action filmed “Swing” TV ad?

Or the cooler-than-cool models cruising around town on bicycles in stretch jeans and cords to Earth Wind & Fire’s song “September?”

Even better, the forever seared-in-our-memories song and dance routine Claire Danes and Patrick Wilson did to “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better,” in the spring of 2007?

Don’t know who was more uncomfortable — the two of them doing an awkward dance over a pair of khakis, which end up peeling off like a Chippendale dancer’s, or us, having to deal with bleeding eardrums.

Not having advertised on television since the aforementioned disaster, the company just announced its scheduled return to the commercial medium — this November-December’s holiday season.

Under the design direction of Patrick Robinson, the retailer has been revamping its offerings for the past few seasons, and now, this move is seen as a vote of confidence for the brand.

The company declined to release any information on the creative direction of the upcoming commercials.

We only hope Gap’s ads are as amusing as sister company Old Navy’s “Supermodelquins” campaign.

HAIR: TED GIBSON FOR BEAUTY.COMNAILS: NONIE CRÈME/BUTTER LONDON FOR BEAUTY.COM

BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: Rockabilly chic

THE SCOOP: “To contrast the dark and muted hues in Vena Cava’s fall collection, I’m doing a really bright eye. For a burst of excitement, I’m applying a thick orange eye liner followed by a black liner on top to provide depth and definition for the lashes,” explained Longo. Then, he thickened and contoured the brows to frame the models’ faces, and finished the look with a natural lip.

Gibson told us the image he used for the hair concept: “These girls are super cool, they’ve been out dancing all night and now they’ve woken up and used a little gel to slick back the sides, so it’s a little mess and trendy, not polished.”

As for nails, Nonie Crème created a deep green polish just for the Vena Cava show. She layered a mattifying solution on top to take away any shimmer.

GET THE LOOK – MAKEUP: For the striking eyes seen here, try Vincent Longo Silky Orange Liquid Shadow, followed by the Aquila shade in the Diamante Quad and then Nerino Vibrant Eyeliner.

GET THE LOOK – HAIR: To rock the hair from this show, slick back the sides with Ted Gibson Fix It, then add texture to the back of the hair with Tame It.

SHOW: Cynthia SteffeMAKEUP: Christian McCulloch for M.A.CHAIR: Rolando Beauchamp for Bumble and BumbleBEAUTY SNAPSHOT: Rock ‘n RollTHE SCOOP:Designer Shawn Kearny describes his new collection as “uptown chic meets downtown cool, tough and chic at the same time.” To match that tone, hairstylist Rolando Beauchamp decided to go with a rock ‘n roll inspired ‘do. “The collection is really beautiful so we decided to do something a little rougher and not as neat to create a nice balance with the clothes.” To give your own look a rock ‘n roll twist simply pull your hair up into a high ponytail using just your hands and then give the hair a little tease. Next wrap it into an oval shaped bun and pin.

On to the makeup! M.A.C artist Christian McCulloch’s look is a classic combination of a smoky eye and a red lip. For this variation use smudge slate colored liner and apply a single coat of mascara. For the lip he says “blend in a pencil but don’t fully line the lips and then fill them in with a deep burgundy lipstick.”

GET THE LOOK MAKEUP: M.A.C Studio Sculpt Foundation, Eyeliner in Smut, Lip Pencil in Currant, Lipstick in Underworld GET THE LOOK HAIR: Bumble and Bumble Styling Cream (apply before blow drying) and Grooming Cream

SHOW: TODD LYNN MAKEUP: TERRY BARBER FOR M.A.C BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: Tilda Swinton in a remake of Mad Max that’s set in Siberia – an ecclesiastic natural beauty

THE SCOOP: There’s nothing forgiving about skintight black leather pants, but they sure do look hot on models with impossibly skinny, long legs. Paired with body-skimming jackets and sky high Louboutins, London designer Todd Lynn’s collection was certainly chic, if a bit grim in its austerity. Terry Barber’s description of the makeup inspiration for the show followed suit: “Imagine Tilda Swinton in a remake of Mad Max but set in Siberia – ecclesiastic natural beauty.” Though that reference is a bit obscure, it’s not lost on me as I look at the models’ pale, matte skin, peach-rimmed eyes and grey-tinged lips. Grey lips are an emerging trend we’ve been seeing at both NY and London Fashion Week. It’ll be interesting to see it this trend continues, or if it makes it off the runways and on to our lips. GET THE LOOK – MAKEUP: Barber brushed M·A·C Pro Loose Powder in Peach along the lower lashline and applied it over lids to set the concealer creating a “tired peach” lid. Next was M.A.C Pro Eye Pencil in Pale Yellow drawn into waterline and between lashes, which were combed through with Select Cover-up Concealer. Lip Conditioner blended with Eye Pencil in Ebony were applied to the lips in a thin, sheer layer.

Extension Myths Busted – Tip of the Day!

We were lucky enough to score an interview with some lovely ladies, Nikki and Riawna, from the Ken Paves Salon in Hollywood. Between the two of them, they have tons of experience, an amazing knowledge bank on the topic, and a crazy client list to boot (think Lindsay Lohan, Colin Farrell, and Eva Longoria). So I rolled what we got from these two into a week’s worth of tips so you can look like you just walked out of the Ken Paves Salon.

When most of us think extensions, we think of a hideous weave and chicks with totally fried, damaged hair. But did you know that 90% of celebs have extensions? Now you’re probably wondering who has them and why you can’t tell what’s what. Riawna says it’s because “not all extensions are bad for your hair. Keep in mind you get what you pay for.” So that girl you’re thinking of with the horrible weave? Well, unfortunately … she got what she paid for. But that girl doesn’t have to be you. You can get a gorgeous head of extensions with the right know how.

Great Lengths “puts hair on hair. It’s not glue. It’s not metal. It’s not plastic. It’s real hair.” They’re also extremely gentle and lightweight so much so that Nikki claims many customers are often over the moon with how light they are, exclaiming, “I can’t even feel them!”

Nikki also suggests researching and asking around to ensure that you’re getting quality so that it doesn’t damage your hair. Yes, you heard right – doesn’t damage your hair. Because of the fact it’s real hair, the Great Lengths extension that the duo use do not do any harm (citing client Eva Longoria’s constant long to short changes as an example), last up to 5 months, and are virtually no maintenance; aside from a little bit of daily brushing so that they don’t tangle and dread at the top.

As mentioned, both girls admit that you get what you pay for, which is why Great Lengths is pricier than say, your average mall salon extensions. But, looking at clients like Gisele and Lindsay Lohan, they are absolutely worth every penny. And for those that can’t afford something like Great Lengths, Nikki says that clip-ons (like Ken Paves’ Hairdo line with pal Jessica Simpson) are a much better option than cheap extensions. “You can take them to your stylist and have them cut. Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist to show you how to use them either. If used the right way, no one will even know you have them in!”
